“Time Is Ticking for The Salvation Army of Johnson County to Make Its Goal”

Johnson County - The Salvation Army of Johnson County is still $33,200 short of its 2016 Holiday Campaign goal. Thanks to the support of the Johnson County and surrounding communities, The Salvation Army of Johnson County has taken in $316,800 toward its 2016 Be The Shield Holiday Campaign goal of $350,000. Donations sent in by mail are still being processed, but support that is to be counted toward this year’s campaign will end on January 31, 2017.

Red Kettles were returned to storage on Christmas Eve after bringing in approximately $85,000 for the Salvation Army. That’s about $14,000 less than last year. The 2016 Red Kettle season was negatively impacted this year by the cold, December weather and a shortage of volunteer bell ringers.

When asked about the impact of not meeting the goal, Lt Tim North of The Salvation Army of Johnson County stated, “Not meeting our goal directly impacts the people who are in need of our services. We will have to take a look at scaling back or even possibly eliminating some of our services if we fail to meet our goal.”

The Salvation Army of Johnson County is taking a grass roots effort to try a raise the remaining funds before their January 31st deadline. They are challenging each community member to help by going online today at ICSalvaitonArmy.org and donating a $25 gift of hope.  Then, go out and challenge their friends, family members and co-workers to match their gift.

For nearly 30years the Salvation Army of Johnson County has been a safety net for thousands of people, providing food, financial assistance, shelter, youth support and more. The Salvation Army of Johnson County relies on over 3,000 hours of volunteer service annually. Please join The Salvation Army of Johnson County by volunteering or making a donation to support your local community.

“Over 1,000 Volunteer Hours From Local Heroes-Change Starts with One”

Johnson County - The Salvation Army of Johnson County would like to thank each of their incredible volunteers who donated their time and talent in 2016! Every day the volunteers of The Salvation Army deliver services to fellow community members that transform other’s futures. Their contributions are appreciated not only daily, but especially during the seasonal months!

Throughout November and December, local heroes from the Johnson County community donated over 1,000 hours of seasonal volunteer time.  Volunteers supported The Salvation Army of Johnson County’s seasonal programs through packing Thanksgiving boxes, collecting food donations, preparing meals, ringing bells at Red Kettles locations and collecting, sorting and distributing toys through our partnership with Marine Toys for Tots.

“We have such a rich history of volunteers giving their time and talent to assist us in “Doing The Most Good” right here in the Johnson County community,” stated Trisha Smith, Development Director. “We would not be able to keep our doors open without them!”

For the year of 2016, the community donated over 3,000 man hours. Volunteer engagement is the foundation of The Salvation Army of Johnson County. With their love, patience and deep dedication to enriching the lives of others, these incredible individuals inspire us all.

The Salvation Army of Johnson County is still working to meet their 2016 Be The Shield Holiday Campaign Goal of $350,000.  With $38,000 to go before January 31, 2017, they are optimistic that the Johnson County community will respond to their call for one final gift to bridge the gap and prevent vital programs from being scaled back or eliminated.

The Salvation Army of Johnson County looks forward to seeing all of their volunteers back in 2017.  They are challenging each volunteer to share the experiences they have had with The Salvation Army and invite a friend to volunteer. Remember— Change Starts with ONE!

“Johnson County-A Community That Comes Together.”

Johnson County – For many people, seeing the red kettles and ringers, it is a true sign that the Christmas season has arrived. The money raised brings hope to thousands of less fortunate families right here in Johnson County. “It’s Simple Math…. The Salvation Army + Community Donations = Life Saving Efforts”

Johnson County – The Salvation Army of Johnson County is doing the “simple math” as their 2016 Be The Shield Holiday Campaign begins to draw to a close.  The campaign is currently 70% of the way toward their $350,000 goal.

“It’s Simple Math…. The Salvation Army + Community Donations = Life Saving Efforts,” stated Trisha Smith, Development Director. “We are in need of less than $100,000 to maintain our programs for 2017. By not meeting our goal, we will not be able to help vulnerable men, women and children in great need.”

With winter arriving much earlier than last year and promising to stay throughout the early months of 2017, The Salvation Army of Johnson County will be once again providing a Winter Day Shelter to protect individuals from the cold. The dining room will be open from 9 to11am Monday – Friday providing warm coffee, a light breakfast and shelter from the extreme weather conditions.

If you would like to help to protect those who need, please consider a tax deductible donation which can be sent by mail, or delivered in person, to The Salvation Army of Johnson County at 1116 S. Gilbert Court Iowa City, IA.  Or visit ICSalvationArmy.org to make an online contribution.

“Bells Will Be Ringing!”

Johnson County – Bells will be ringing throughout Johnson County as The Salvation Army of Johnson County starts its Be The Shield 2016 Holiday Season.  The Salvation Army Red Kettle Campaign is a long standing tradition which rings in the Christmas season. For over 30 years The Salvation Army of Johnson County has maintained this tradition welcoming shoppers as they work their way throughout the community during the holiday season.

The Be The Shield 2016 Holiday Campaign goal has been set at $350,000 which comprises approximately 60% of the annual operating budget of The Salvation Army of Johnson County. During “Voices of Vets” this Saturday, University of Iowa Community Credit Union will be picking up the tab, offering a FREE cup of regular coffee to veterans from 11am-1pm to thank them for their service and toy donation. The Salvation Army of Johnson County and Marine Toys for Tots program is currently collecting new, unwrapped toys to serve nearly 1,400 children in Johnson County this Christmas.  The Salvation Army of Johnson County is also encouraging an additional donation of a new or gently used book, for children 0-15 years of age putting a special spotlight on literacy.

“Each year we strive to provide each child with a large toy, two small toys, a stocking stuffer and family game.” said Rachel Lehmann, Case Manager for The Salvation Army of Johnson County. “This year we wanted to add an emphasis on literacy for the children we serve.”

Toys are currently being collected throughout Johnson County and will be sorted and distributed next week to pre-registered families.  If you would like to help their efforts:

  • Donate a toy and/or book at a drop box throughout Iowa City, Coralville or North Liberty
  • Volunteer your time by signing up to help at ICSalvationArmy.org to sort, pack, distribute, and clean up toys.

Bell Ringing Volunteers are the key to assisting to reach the holiday goal. For each 2 hours of ringing a bell your donated time can:

  • Prevent a family from going hungry.

  • Provide toys, books and/or games for a family this holiday season.

  • Provide clothing and temporary shelter to allow individuals to stay warm and safe.

The Salvation Army of Johnson County is calling All Heroes to Be The Shield this holiday season.  82 cents of each dollar that is donated in a Red Kettle stays in this community.  How can you make a difference?

  • Volunteers are needed to help ring at area kettle locations.

  • Help to recruit volunteer groups for bell ringing.

  • Drop spare change in a Red Kettle often.

  • Volunteer to drive bell ringers to locations throughout Johnson County.

  • Host a counter kettle at your small business or start an office collection.

To schedule a time to ring, please visit our website ICSalvationArmy.org or you are welcome to contact us at 319)337-3725.  You can also donate towards our Christmas efforts through our website address.
